All confirmed volunteers will be equipped with a program packet prior to departure that will include:
- General information about your participation in the program
- Health and safety guidelines
- Travel arrangements and passport and visa requirements
- Fund-raising ideas and supplies.
All volunteers will be given a one-day orientation shortly after arrival in Ghana. The orientation includes a review of literature compiled from academic research on HIV/AIDS in Africa, and instruction on how to present the “HIV/AIDS 101″ seminar and curriculum that volunteers teach at schools.
Volunteers will be taught about the various social, cultural and economic factors contributing to the spread of HIV/AIDS in Ghana, and how we merge these issues into our dance-dramas. The orientation after arrival will also familiarize volunteers with local customs and their stay in Ghana.
Travel Insurance
Travel Insurance covering at least hospitalization and emergency medical evacuation is strongly recommended by the Sankofa Center. You may want to consider purchasing a comprehensive package plan covering trip cancellation, loss of baggage, compensation for delays and other travel issues.
Insuremytrip.com is an excellent way to compare prices and policies.
Mnui.com is a good source of medical expense only insurance.
The Sankofa Center takes the health and safety of volunteers very seriously. Travel insurance is a added measure of security you can take to protect yourself. Despite our measures, there is always some inherent risk involved in any foreign travel. You should know that your participation on the program is at your own risk and you will have to sign a waiver of liability form as a condition of your participation.
