The Sankofa Center is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization combining traditional African dance and music as a tool for HIV/AIDS education and community outreach.
Our goal is to support the prevention of HIV/AIDS by encouraging behavioral change through the use of traditional dance and art forms that foster open communication and accurate knowledge of HIV/AIDS.
The Sankofa Center’s programming is two-fold: touring dance-dramas are aimed at educating marginalized villagers with little access to resources and information; after-school programs target youth between the ages of 13-19+.
Founded by a University of California educated scholar in 2004, the Sankofa Center uses culturally appropriate means – the arts merged with health information – to educate rural villagers about HIV/AIDS on tours throughout West Africa.
