Treatment strategy currently for HIV virus involves the following principles:

To have an effective drug that kills the HIV virus once it enters the body.

Prevention

To create a vaccine that would prevent the disease.

Awareness

To educate people world wide about the dangers of AIDS and how to prevent the HIV infection

Current treatment against AIDS Are Called:

  • Anti-HIV (also called antiretroviral) medications which are used to control the reproduction of the virus and to slow the progression of HIV-related disease.Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) is the recommended treatment for HIV infection. HAART combines three or more anti-HIV medications in a daily regimen.Anti-HIV medications do not cure HIV infection and individuals taking these medications can still transmit HIV to others.
  • HAART (Highly Active AntiRetroviral Therapy ) and new term ART ( AntiRetroviral Therapy) are essentially equivalent. The historical background of HAART is that earlier multiple drug therapy was not very active or potent. Low Medication adherence occured due to doses missed or portions of multiple drug regimens omitted due to side effects.The aim today is to make combination drugs and drugs that are more effective thus limiting the amount to a manageable number. Now all approved uses of ART (except for some exceptions of post-exposure prophylaxis(PEP).) is called  HAART.
  • post-exposure prophylaxis(PEP)  is preventive medical treatment started immediately after exposure to a pathogen (such as a disease-causing virus ), in order to prevent infection by the pathogen and the development of disease.“
