![]() Akwaaba!(Welcome!) Ghana is a small country on the coast of West Africa, bordering Côte d'Ivoire to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Accra is the capital and largest city, maintaining a population of nearly 2 million people. Ghana is the ideal travel destination for anyone wanting to experience the beauty of Africa. Ghana is rated one of the safest countries in Africa due to the peaceful nature of the people, stable political climate, and acceptance of international travelers. We encourage volunteers to take advantage of their stay to experience the cultural and natural wonders of Ghana.
World heritage sites, Cape Coast Castle and Elimina Castle, are located a few hours from Accra. These "slave castles" held by colonial powers (including the Portuguese, Dutch, Swedes and eventually the British) were used to hold millions of Africans from West Africa prior to being transported to the Caribbean and the America's as slaves.
Located just 20 kilometers from Cape Coast is Kakum National Park. Kakum is home to elephants, monkeys, Bongo antelope, over 800 rare species of birds, and is world renowned for its tree-top canopy walkway that spans 333 meters. ![]() Interested in going on Safari? Mole National Park is the largest eco-tourism site in the country located 170 kilometers west of Tamale, in northern Ghana. It is home to 600 elephants, thousands of antelopes, hartebeests, waterbucks, buffalos, warthogs and countless bird species. Uncounted lions, leopards, hyenas and various primates can also be seen in Mole. ![]() Ghana has a variety of beautiful beaches for you to explore. Labadi in Accra, or Kokrobite located just 30 miles west of Accra, are of the most serene and secluded beaches, perfect for a weekend getaway!
There are a variety of festivals and cultural occasions throughout the year. We suggest you obtain a travel guide to plan your explorations with S.C.A.D.C.’s assistance. |
